  • Images never leave your device

Check the size of any image in seconds

This image dimensions checker shows the exact width and height in pixels of your images, along with their aspect ratio, megapixels, orientation, file type and file size. Drop in one image or a whole folder's worth at once, and the results appear in a table you can copy as CSV for a spreadsheet. Nothing is uploaded, so it is safe for private photos and client files.

It is handy whenever an upload form, a social network or a website template asks for an image of a specific size, and you need to know whether yours fits before you send it.

What the results mean

ValueMeaning
Width × heightThe real number of pixels in the image file, not the size it happens to be displayed at
Aspect ratioThe shape of the image, simplified: 1920 × 1080 becomes 16:9, 1080 × 1080 becomes 1:1
MegapixelsWidth × height ÷ 1,000,000. A 4000 × 3000 photo is 12 MP.
OrientationLandscape (wider than tall), portrait (taller than wide) or square
Type and file sizeThe format (JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG…) and how much storage the file takes

Pixels, DPI and print size

Screens only care about pixels: a 1200 × 800 image looks the same whether its file says 72 DPI or 300 DPI. DPI (dots per inch) only matters when you print. To work out how large you can print a photo at good quality, divide its pixel size by 300:

  • 3000 × 2000 px at 300 DPI prints at 10 × 6.7 inches (25 × 17 cm).
  • 1800 × 1200 px at 300 DPI prints at 6 × 4 inches (15 × 10 cm).
  • For posters viewed from a distance, 150 DPI is usually enough, which doubles the print size.

Why the size on screen is different

Web pages, image viewers and chat apps often scale pictures down to fit, and high-resolution screens use more than one physical pixel per CSS pixel. That is why an image can look small on screen but be thousands of pixels wide. This checker reads the image's natural size from the file, so the numbers are always the real ones. Current browsers also apply the rotation flag that phones store in photos, so a portrait photo is reported as portrait, just as it appears.

Batch checking

Drop as many images as you like at once. Each one gets its own row, and Copy CSV puts the whole table on your clipboard, ready to paste into Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers. That makes it easy to audit a set of product photos, check a batch of uploads against a size requirement or document the assets of a website.

Image Dimensions Checker: frequently asked questions

Does it show the real pixel size?

Yes. It reads the image's natural dimensions, not the size it is displayed at.

Can I check many images at once?

Yes. Drop as many as you like; they are processed locally in your browser.

How do I find the dimensions of an image?

Drop it on this page. Its width and height in pixels appear straight away, together with the aspect ratio and file size.

How do I calculate the aspect ratio of an image?

Divide the width and height by their greatest common divisor. 1920 × 1080 divides by 120 to give 16:9. The checker does this for you.

What size is a 12 megapixel photo?

Usually 4000 × 3000 pixels (4:3). It prints well at about 13 × 10 inches at 300 DPI.

Does DPI change the image size?

Not on screen. DPI is only a printing hint. The pixel dimensions decide how large and sharp the image is on a screen.
