Convert images between formats in your browser

This free image converter changes images to WebP, JPG, PNG or AVIF in a couple of clicks. It handles everything from a single PNG that needs to be a JPG to a folder of photos that should all become WebP for a website. Drop the files in, choose the format, and download the results one by one or as a ZIP. Your files are converted on your own device and never uploaded, so it is quick, private and has no file limits.

It accepts any format your browser can open, including JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, BMP, ICO and AVIF, and on Apple devices HEIC photos as well.

Which format should you choose?

  • WebP is the best all-round choice for websites. It supports transparency and is much smaller than JPG and PNG. Every current browser displays it.
  • JPG is the most compatible format for photos. Use it when files will be printed, emailed or opened in older software.
  • PNG is lossless and supports transparency, ideal for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images with text. It makes photos very large.
  • AVIF compresses photos even better than WebP, but encoding is slower and depends on your browser. If it is not available, the option is disabled.

Transparency and background color

JPG cannot store transparency. When you convert a transparent PNG, WebP, GIF or SVG to JPG, the transparent areas are filled with a background color you choose, white by default. Pick a color that matches where the image will be shown. PNG, WebP and AVIF keep the transparency as it is.

More control

  • Quality: set the quality for JPG, WebP and AVIF. 85–90% keeps photos virtually identical to the original.
  • Target file size: make every converted image fit under a limit in KB, for upload forms and email.
  • Limit dimensions: shrink large images to a maximum width and height while converting.
  • File names: add a suffix such as -web to every converted file.
  • Before and after: compare the original and the converted version with a slider.

Your settings are remembered in this browser, so repeated conversions take a single drop.

Good to know

  • Animated GIFs and animated WebPs are converted using their first frame.
  • SVGs are drawn at their natural size; use Limit dimensions or the Image Resizer to change it.
  • Converting re-encodes the image, which removes EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location.
  • Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore detail that JPG compression already removed; it only stops further loss.

Mainly want smaller files? The Image Compressor keeps the original format by default. Need icons for a website? The Favicon Generator creates favicon.ico and every PNG size from one image.

Image Converter: frequently asked questions

Can I convert to AVIF?

AVIF encoding depends on your browser. If it is not available, the option is disabled and WebP is a good alternative.

What happens to transparency in JPG?

JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose (white by default).

How do I convert PNG to JPG?

Drop the PNG files here, choose JPG, pick a background color for any transparent areas and download. Batches are saved as a ZIP.

How do I convert WebP to JPG or PNG?

Drop the WebP images, choose JPG or PNG and download the converted files. It works for images saved from websites, too.

Can I convert HEIC iPhone photos to JPG?

Yes, in Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad, which can open HEIC files. Other browsers cannot decode HEIC yet; on an iPhone you can also set Camera > Formats to Most Compatible.

Is it safe to convert images online here?

Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to a server.
